Start your own Youtube Channel!

So, you’re a passionate gamer and thinking, maybe I’ll start my own YouTube channel. Well let me say to you, Just Do It! You will have a lot of fun doing it. I have just reached the somewhat magical 1700 subscribers as I write this article and I hope when your reading this in the future its much larger than that. Its been fun and kept me busy as well.

What do you need to start start your own YouTube channel and be a good YouTuber? I would say be yourself and be individual. Try to make your channel different from the others. Don’t try to be another clone.

There are many review games channels and tech channels out there. The variety of games is enormous and of course VLOG channels have an enormous amount of content. No matter what you want to do, you just need to get started.

Start your own YouTube channel and Recording

If you’re a gaming channel like “Let’s Fly VFR” then you need video capture software to record the games well as desktop when required. NVIDIA’s Shadow play is amazing and providing you have an Nvidia GPU you can use it.

If not, there is open broadcast software to get you recording. They are both free software so that’s a great place to start. Once you can capture you need a mic if your going to be talking to your audience.

Its not a crucial part of the mix as you start your own YouTube channel to make it as top quality as possible. I like to watch a couple channels that I watch don’t speak at all. They are very creative with adding titles as their commentary and it’s still very entertaining.

If you wish to speak to the world then get as good a microphone as you can but you can start with a reasonable headset and mic combination to get started. You can record your voice track separately with shadow play or you can use Audacity to record your voice while gaming.

Start your own YouTube channel and record Voice

Audacity is a free and quite powerful piece of software which can give you a pretty good audio level and quality removing background noise and allowing you to EQ your voice and sound more radio quality. There are certainly a few YouTube tutorials on editing your voice with Audacity for your videos.

Making your videos is best done with some preconceived idea of what you want to present. Just talking mindlessly about nothing does not make a great video. There needs to be a point to your video, and it’s got to be something you’re interested in. Don’t make a guitar channel if you can’t at least play because you can’t talk with any authority. It will be obvious straight away. It could be you want to play guitar and you want to document your way through the process. Lesson 1 to 1000 or something like that.

Start your own YouTube Channel What to Be!

Let’s Fly VFR is focused generally on general aviation because I flew light sport aircraft for a while, so I have a real-world perspective. Something many other YouTube gamers in the flight simulation genre do not. It’s a point of difference for me and most fly the big airliners and that’s not my thing, so I don’t do it. Does it affect my subscribers and how many I get? Possibly but as time goes on, I will gain the following of those with the same interest. It’s a marathon not a sprint on YouTube.

If you expect to make a couple videos and dominate you will likely be disappointed. You have to earn your place on YouTube and when you do then Google and YouTube will be on your side and promoting you.

The Competition is Fierce

YouTube gets hundreds of hours of video uploaded every minute, so it takes time and planning to get to where you want to be. Let’s talk about planning your videos and what is most often recommended to be part of the video and its production. Having a great Thumbnail is important to get the viewers attention. Its your look at me signboard!

Having a consistent brand name for your channel so people remember your name. Letting the viewers know in the first few seconds what your video is about is important. Then deliver to your viewers what you promised. You can start from the beginning to the end or as in some movies or tv shows, show the end then how you got there. The journey sometimes is more important than the destination.

Getting Subscribers for your YouTube Channel

Remind them to Subscribe if they enjoyed your content. Share and Like. You can have a standard piece of video or voice over to drop in whenever you need it. You can pre produce a standard Intro that leads into the subject for the days video.

Don’t have a minute intro – People hate more than maybe 20 seconds so get it done, have an impact and get on with the content. Some channels don’t use much more than a quick graphic to get started. Some go to great lengths to have an amazing 3d Intro. Its great but be ready to deliver.

Finally like a good book you need to have a great ending, wrap up the point of the video and invite the viewers to watch more content.

Get out there and look at other channels in your niche and think what you can do to be different. Good luck and enjoy the ride. It will be a fun one and don’t give up. Just Do It.

Check List

Capture Software – Davinci Resolve FREE – OBS (FREE)

Microphone: Whatever you can afford. The Blue snowball is a popular one.

Camera’s and Lighting: These can be a web cam as they are great quality to get started but you need to be aware of lighting. A good natural light can be enough to get started. Try a few practice runs and see what shadows are there, are you clear, does the light make the colors unnatural. Just take the time to look. You don’t get a second chance at a fantastic FIRST impression.

Plan Plan Plan

Take some time to consider what you want to deliver – What’s the point and have an idea mentally how your going to present it. You can also consider your B roll. Lots of free stuff available out there or create your own in game. Where you can replay sections and change camera views as you can in X Plane 11 makes it easy to go back and get that shot you wanted from the repay.

If you have fun your viewers will know it. If you making a video just to make a video then you’re not going to come across well.

The last thing is to be consistent. Make 1 video a week and always release it on the same day and time so your viewers are waiting for it. If you can do more videos, then great especially when your starting out. Content is king as you will hear often on the creator channels. Good content not lots!
Good Luck and get started creating.
