Why are flight Sim Rudder Pedals so Important?
Flight Sim rudder pedals are a crucial are a crucial part of the flying equation but are so often overlooked. In real world flying they are a big part in your coordinated flight.
What is coordinated flight.
When flying any fixed wing or rotary wing aircraft coordinated flight can be felt by passengers by the need to slide in their seats when the aircraft turns.
It’s unsettling to passengers and instructors alike. You can contribute it to the main factor passers get air sickness so using rudder pedals is going to help greatly. To help correct this, when you add left rudder as you make a left turn just as you make the turn. With the ailerons and right rudders working together when you turn will make everyone happy.
Another important use of the rudder is during crosswind landing. Crosswind landings are done by lowering the wing into the wind on approach so the sideways movement of the aircraft across the extended center line of the runway. With correct use of the rudder the aircraft flies straight down the runway BUT its pointing into the wind to counter the wind drift.
We don’t want to touch down not pointing straight or we are likely to shoot off the runway. We can also bend the undercarriage with the sideways force. We just add opposite rudder just as we flare so as to straighten the aircraft as we touch down. The other method is to fly the whole approach with the aircraft pointing straight with the wing still lowered into the wind direction.

Cross Wind Landing
Then comes the cross wind landing here rudder really earns its every cent allowing you to hold into the wind and pull that noes to line up with the runway just as your main wheels touch down straight and no excessive sideways stress break your main landing gear. And lastly one of my favorite things to do in a real aircraft is to side slip to a landing.
This technique is invaluable when your to high and or you need to lose height quickly. To do this you roll the aircraft one way then apply opposite rudder. The aircraft will keep the same airspeed generally but the VSI will take a dive and you will descend like an escalator. To arrest the descent just center the controls. Its hard to co ordinate this with a twist stick for rudder but it can be done. Go give it a try but try getting some rudders first. You wont look back.
To the uninitiated rudder pedals for flight sim can be seen as ancillary and or unnecessary but in many ways they are more important than the other controls. Starting from holding the breaks on to steering your aircraft, it is often the rudder pedals that are required. Yes in some airliners there may be a separate control wheel but in GA to modern fighters and transport the rudder pedals are the only way you can get to the end of the runway.
In your first turn after takeoff the little black ball called the slip indicator shows you all is not well. Your passengers feel this awkward sliding motion in their stomachs compounded by their inner ear not agreeing with the body position. This is when the brown bags come out and yes it gets messy from then. Making a balanced turn with the correct amount or roll, pitch and yaw your flying skills will go unnoticed and this is how it should be. If your passengers are noticing then your rudder skills are poor. Oh yes I hear the many screaming, but there is auto rudder. Yes there is but are you flying a simulator or playing a game where accuracy doesn’t matter.
