Make Scenery Fast for X Plane 11

If you want to make your flight sim amazing then learning how to make scenery for X Plane 11 with world editor by Laminar Research is where to start. This utility is used to build airports, towns and cities to be used within X Plane 11. It uses scenery and object libraries both included in WED itself as well as any libraries you may have downloaded from xplane.org or anywhere else.

You can download World Editor (WED) from both LetsFlyVFR scenery downloads page or directly from Laminar Research’s developers website. It simply is installed as a stand alone program so put it anywhere you like. It does not make any entries into windows and can be moved at will.

To get started how to make scenery for X Plane 11 Firstly you need to download and and install the utility onto your computer. It works on Windows, Mac and Linux machines as does x Plane 11. Once you have downloaded it you will have an icon on your desktop.

When you open the utility you will be net with this screen and you will have a little setup to do. It’s very quick! There are three buttons at the bottom which are self explanatory. Click the CHOOSE X PLANE FOLDER button and navigate to you X Plane directory. The program now knows then where to go to find your custom scenery folder. 

Start Building Scenery in World Editor

Lets Get Building! 

  1. Click on NEW Scenery Package: 
  2. Give the UNTITLED blue line, Clicking then type the name you want to call the airport in the blue line. eg: Gawler  YGAW
  3. Now select OPEN SCENERY PACKAGE. 
  4. FILE menu – “Import from Airport from Scenery Gateway” – Search your airport by name and select the version you want. There will be an approved version as well as others as well as a basic version if its 2D.

5. The chosen airport will be displayed in the center screen. The Objects Libraries are in the 1st Screen and the description of the item selected appears to the right in the third screen.

6. Have a search through the object library and you can search in the top vacant box for aircraft, hangars and much more. 

7. Select an item and it will appear in the lower LH screen. If you like it then click on the map where you want it located. 

8. Click on the little green cross usually on the object to grab it and move it to where you want it. 

9. To rotate the object click on it and there is a ring around the cross – Click on the Line near the cross and rotate the object.

Create a Runway in World Editor

Creating a runway is super simple.

Click on the RUNWAY tool then click on your plane where you want the runway to start. Choose the center point then select the other end of the runway.
