Deep Dive: Why XP12 Map Enhancement Is a Game-Changer for Scenery in X-Plane.
While Ortho4XP and AutoOrtho have served the community well over the years, they come with trade offs massive downloads, storage headaches, and long setup times. XP12 Map Enhancement offers a sleek alternative: real-time streaming of satellite imagery directly into the simulator, giving you beautiful terrain visuals without building a tile library.
Let’s fully explore why XP12 Map Enhancement is such a compelling choice:

What XP12 Map Enhancement Really Does.
X-Plane 12 Map Enhancement (XP12ME) is a lightweight but powerful plugin that replaces the default land class textures of X-Plane 12 with streamed satellite map tiles from major online sources while you fly.
It intercepts terrain texture requests from the simulator and feeds in Google Maps, Bing, and other providers, giving you scenery that looks more like Microsoft Flight Simulator, but inside the X-Plane environment.
It Streams. It Doesn’t Download.
Unlike Ortho4XP, which requires:
- Manually choosing map sources
- Downloading gigabytes of imagery
- Building mesh and overlay files
- Managing storage for every tile…
XP12ME skips all that. It dynamically streams just the scenery you need, just when you need it, like how Netflix buffers a movie scene-by-scene.
XP12 Map Enhancement – Full Feature List.
Feature | Description |
---|---|
Real-time Map Streaming | No tiles to create or store; streamed from providers like Google & Bing |
Multiple Map Providers | Choose from 8+ sources depending on region or detail level |
Custom Map Provider Support | Add your own tile servers via config files |
Works with Default Mesh | Doesn’t interfere with airports, elevation, or mesh like some ortho mods |
Configurable Tile Settings | Adjust tile LOD (Level of Detail) and caching behavior |
Automatic Caching | Frequently flown areas are cached locally for faster reload |
On-the-fly Switching | Change imagery providers mid-flight |
VR Compatible | Compatible with VR and multi-monitor setups (Pro only) |
Lightweight Installation | No separate ortho folders, overlays, or HD mesh to install |
How Good is the Scenery?
Better than you’d expect. The free version delivers crisp map tiles that are superior to default textures and in many cases on par with mid-level Ortho4XP setups. The Pro version unlocks Level 18–20 tile resolution (zoom level), which is nearly equal to the finest ortho imagery.

Realism for VFR.
If you fly low and slow especially in GA aircraft XP12ME is perfect for:
- Bush flying in Alaska or Canada
- VFR sightseeing in scenic regions
- Pattern work near small airports
- Exploring your hometown with actual roads and farms visible
Free vs Pro Version – What Do You Get?
Feature | Free Version | Pro Version |
---|---|---|
Map Sources | Limited (Google, Bing, ArcGIS) | All supported (8–12) |
Tile Resolution | Medium (ZL16–17) | High (ZL18–20) |
Caching | Basic | Smarter prefetching & caching |
High-resolution monitors | Limited support | Optimized for 2K/4K, multi-monitor |
VR Support | Partial | Full VR optimization |
Cost | Free | ~$40 USD one-time (lifetime) Pro Licence. |
Tip: Buy once, use forever. The Pro license is often a one-time purchase, and updates are frequent.
Internet Usage – Is It Heavy?
XP12ME does use your internet, but it’s not excessive. You can expect:
- Around 500MB–1GB per hour of streaming at medium resolution
- Much less in areas you’ve already flown over (due to caching)
- Optional limits to prevent overuse
Tip: If you’re flying long-haul or VFR loops in the same area, caching helps reduce data usage drastically.

What About Performance?
Performance varies slightly based on:
- Your internet speed (10 Mbps+ is ideal)
- SSD vs HDD for local caching
- System RAM and GPU
For most users:
- FPS impact is minimal
- Fewer stutters than AutoOrtho due to simpler integration
- Compatible with most overlays (SimHeaven X-World, etc.)
Use Case Examples
- 🛩️ Bush Flying in Alaska → Use Bing or ArcGIS for vivid rural textures.
- 🏙️ Urban Tour over Tokyo → Use Google or Gaode for updated cityscapes.
- 🛫 Low and slow Cessna flights → Enjoy high immersion without worrying about tile boundaries.
- 🌐 Long-haul IFR → Use default or low-res streams to save bandwidth.
Comparison: XP12ME vs Ortho4XP vs AutoOrtho

How to Install XP12 Map Enhancement – Basic Steps (Free Version)
Prerequisites:
- X-Plane 12 (latest version)
- Internet connection (required for streaming imagery)
- Windows PC (XP12ME is currently optimized for Windows)
Step 1: Download the XP12 Map Enhancement Tool
- Visit the official GitHub page:
Search for “XP12 Map Enhancement GitHub” (official repo by Mob9910 or current maintainer). - Download the latest release
.zip
file (typically named something likeXP12MapEnhancement_vX.X.X.zip
).
Step 2: Extract the Files
- Extract the ZIP file to a temporary folder using WinRAR or 7-Zip.
- Inside you’ll find folders like:
resources
plugins
MapProxy
- Configuration files
Step 3: Install into Your X-Plane 12 Directory
- Navigate to your X-Plane 12 root folder (e.g.,
C:\X-Plane 12
). - Drag and drop the following folders from the extracted files into your root X-Plane directory:
resources
plugins
MapProxy
(if included)
- Allow it to merge with any existing folders if prompted.
Step 4: Choose Your Map Provider (Optional)
- Open the
config.py
or similar file (can be found inside the plugin folder or config folder). - Look for this line:
map_provider = "Google"
- You can change
"Google"
to:"Bing"
"ArcGIS"
"Gaode"
"Tencent"
- etc.
Tip! Google and Bing are recommended for global use.
Step 5: Launch X-Plane 12
- Run X-Plane 12 as normal.
- The plugin will start automatically.
- As you load into the world, watch your scenery transform—you’ll see real satellite imagery streaming in place of default land textures.
Optional: Check it’s Working
- You’ll know it’s working when:
- Scenery looks like Google/Bing Maps
- Your log file (
Log.txt
) showsMap Enhancement Loaded
- You see terrain streaming (may take 10–30 seconds to load as tiles cache)
Notes:
- To improve performance, fly first in a small area to allow the plugin to cache tiles.
- For VR users or multiple monitors, consider the Pro version for better texture handling.
- You must be online while flying for tiles to stream.

Why would you say this is a 1 time free of between $25 and $35 when the Map Enhancement site very specifically says it’s $40 per year? Per year and 1 time fee aren’t even close to the same thing. Please fix this in your article.
Hi Bob, very much appreciate your comment. I’ll confirm and edit as required. Thanks very much for visiting my website. All the very best. Brendon.
Corrected – Again appreciate the eye for detail. Regards Brendon
You corrected the amount but the box still 1 time lifetime pro license. I guess maybe there might be some different pricing in whichever country you’re in, but when I go to the site to sign up for pro, it’s quite specifically $40 per year.
