The Comprehensive Guide to the DCS World Store.
DCS World (Digital Combat Simulator World) is a premier combat flight simulation platform offering players unmatched realism, detailed aircraft, and immersive experiences. Central to this ecosystem is the DCS World Store, a one-stop shop for all your module and content needs. This guide will break down everything you need to know about the DCS World Store—what it offers, how much modules cost, and how you can even try some for free.
What is the DCS World Store?
The DCS World Store is the official online marketplace for Eagle Dynamics (ED), the creators of DCS World. It’s the main platform where players can purchase modules, terrain maps, campaigns, and more. The store offers the most extensive selection of content for DCS, including exclusive modules not available on third-party platforms like Steam.
Where Can You Find It?
The DCS World Store is available online at www.digitalcombatsimulator.com. It’s accessible worldwide and supports various payment methods, making it easy for players from different regions to purchase content.
What’s Available in the DCS World Store?
The store offers a wide variety of content to enhance your DCS World experience:
1. Aircraft Modules
- Fighter Jets: Modern aircraft like the F-16C Viper, F/A-18C Hornet, and F-14 Tomcat.
- Helicopters: Rotary-wing aircraft like the AH-64D Apache, UH-1H Huey, and Mi-24 Hind.
- WWII Aircraft: Classics like the Spitfire LF Mk IX, P-51D Mustang, and Bf 109 K-4.
- Trainer Aircraft: Perfect for beginners, such as the L-39 Albatros and C-101 Aviojet.
Aircraft modules are highly detailed, featuring clickable cockpits, advanced flight models, and realistic systems.
2. Terrain Maps
Enhance your experience with high-quality maps that bring the battlefield to life:
- Modern Maps: Persian Gulf, Syria, and South Atlantic.
- WWII Maps: Normandy 2.0 and The Channel.
- Specialized Maps: The Marianas (free) and Caucasus (free).
3. Campaigns
Campaigns are story-driven missions that test your skills in realistic combat scenarios. They range from beginner-friendly training campaigns to advanced combat operations.
4. Asset Packs
Enhance the realism of your missions with additional AI-controlled units, such as the WWII Asset Pack. There are a number of asset packs available now so you can create in depth scenarios with airbases and ground units in realistic situations. These make the building of missions super easy and they are not generally expensive.
5. Bundles and Packs
Occasionally, the store offers bundles that combine popular modules at discounted rates, giving you more value for your money.
Can I Trial Modules?
Yes! One of the most user-friendly features of the DCS World Store is the Free Trial Program. This program allows you to try almost any module for 14 days free of charge. If you choose not to purchase you can retry the same module in six months time.
How It Works:
- Visit the Free Trials page on the DCS World Store website.
- Log in with your Eagle Dynamics account.
- Choose a module you’d like to trial.
- Download the module through the DCS World client.
- You will have to Verify your account – Prevents people trying to continually trial modules. Its easy!
You can trial one module at a time, and after the trial ends, you can choose another module to try. This allows you to test different aircraft, maps, and campaigns before committing to a purchase.
Can I Play DCS World for Free?
Yes! DCS World is free to download and play. The base game includes two free aircraft and a free map:
Free Aircraft:
- Su-25T Frogfoot: A ground-attack aircraft, great for beginners exploring combat operations.
- TF-51D Mustang: A civilian version of the P-51 Mustang, ideal for learning basic flight maneuvers.
Free Map:
- Caucasus Map: A sprawling and detailed map, perfect for training and early missions. If you don’t purchase any other maps the default one will keep you busy exploring while you hide and kill your enemies both in the Air, on the land and at sea. The Caucasus map is pretty good and gets some love as time passes.
- Items like the new fog/Dust in the latest release work with this and all modules. It’s really not required that you ever purchase a new map module unless it fits a specific need. Personally I have also have the SYRIA map which is awesome and I fly online there a lot in the 8-s server. I purchased the South Atlantic map and that was the biggest disappointment I’ve had.
- It has been optimised but not many people seem to use it and the advent of Falklands focussed combat multiplayer servers has not eventuated to my knowledge.
Additional Free Content:
- The Marianas Map, a highly detailed modern map, is also available for free.
Are There Free Modules and Campaigns?
While the free base content is limited, the DCS community offers a wealth of free mods, missions, and campaigns. These can be downloaded from platforms like the DCS User Files section on the official website. Many creators share high-quality content for free, including:
- Custom missions and campaigns.
- Aircraft mods (though they may not match the fidelity of official modules).
Free content is a great way to expand your DCS experience without additional costs.
How Much Do Modules Cost?
The cost of modules varies depending on the type and complexity of the content. Here’s a general breakdown:
1. Aircraft Modules:
- Modern Fighters and Helicopters: $59.99–$79.99.
- WWII Aircraft: $29.99–$49.99.
- Trainer Aircraft: $29.99–$49.99.
2. Terrain Maps:
- Maps typically range from $39.99 to $59.99.
- Free maps like Caucasus and Marianas are included with DCS World.
3. Campaigns:
- Campaigns are generally priced between $9.99 and $29.99, depending on length and complexity. There is a lot of work that goes into these modules and honestly the small amount they ask for is incredible value. Always check if you need and of the addon packs like the WWII or other assets packs so they will be complete when you fly over them and not have bases bare when they should be full of activity.
4. Asset Packs:
DCS World offers both free and paid asset packs to enhance the realism of its missions. Free assets include basic AI aircraft, vehicles, and ships that come with the core game, while paid packs like the WWII Asset Pack ($29.99) and the Supercarrier Asset Pack (bundled with the $49.99 Supercarrier module) provide highly detailed, era-specific units.
Some maps, such as the Persian Gulf and South Atlantic, also include map-specific assets. Certain campaigns, especially WWII and naval-focused ones, require these paid asset packs for full functionality, so check campaign requirements before purchasing.
- The WWII Asset Pack costs $29.99, adding historical AI units to your missions.
Discounts and Sales:
The DCS World Store frequently runs sales, offering discounts of up to 50% or more on modules and campaigns. Special events like the DCS Summer Sale and Winter Sale are excellent opportunities to expand your library affordably. This is an excellent time to save yourself some money so remember you can trial these products once every six months. You can then purchase when it suits your needs. MAybe your happy in single player but think a Cold War Multiplayer server would be fun! If so you need to purchase the appropriate map module and have an appropriate aircraft to fly. Its huge fun 🙂
New Modules and Early Access
The DCS World Store often features early access modules, allowing players to experience new aircraft or features before their official release. These modules are typically sold at a discount during early access, with regular updates as development progresses. Examples include the F-15E Strike Eagle and the AH-64D Apache. Modules in EARLY ACCESS are often lacking many of the more complex systems as well as weapons options but these are added over time for no extra cost. Once you have a module you rarely need to pay for any upgrades.
Having said this there have been a few releases in the last 12 months such as the new Flaming Cliffs 24 which is an updated version of the FC-3 which is quite old. THe FC3 modules are No clickable cockpits and often simpler flight models but an awesome way to get into DCS World inexpensively at the beginning. Also a lot of MOD aircraft use the base models from FC 3 to operate.
The F-5 Tiger II recently received a paid update with new skins and textures offering glass reflections and a series of new high quality skins as well as three new pilot models which are extremely good. I have the original F-5 and chose to update it. THe cost was $9.95 on release but going to $14.95 in the future. I used some points and paid 5 dollars for the very worthwhile upgrade in the aircraft. Its incredibly worth it in this occasion.
Word of warning – My personal belief is not to purchase in PRE RELEASE where you pay and do not yet receive a module. Honestly I cannot understand why you would do this but I understand the developers are looking for some returns. Its not like the module wont be available first day to all who wish to purchase a DIGITAL MODULE. They are not going to run out on the shelf are they! Each to their own on this point.
